One of the things that we have been cultivating in our children since they were toddlers is stewarding time spent with the Lord. We set aside the first parts of our day to spend time in prayer and His Word, but this isn’t something that we just sit down to do so that we can check it off our to do list for the day. We spend time with God because He is our life sustaining foundation. We spend time with Him because a relationship is built through intentional time spent together. And it is important our children are trained to see God as their source of life as well.
Nothing else will satisfy the way a deep and personal relationship with the Lord will, not even the perfectly checked off to do list.
As parents, we are to train our children to hunger and thirst for righteousness. And this starts with you. It starts with you making time with God a priority in your life and training them to do the same.
Ways We Cultivate This In Our Home...And You Can Too
- Daily, intentional time set aside to spend time with God, both reading His Word and in prayer. This is something we have been cultivating since before my children were born. Read about how you can cultivate time with God in every season of childhood.
- Daily Gratitude Journal. We use these journals from our shop for this.
- Discussion on what they learned through reading the Word, what they learned about God, and how they can be transformed by what they learned.
- Prayer throughout the day
We can’t only go to Him when we need something, but we must sit and savor in His goodness. We must study who He is. We must learn the voice of our Father both through reading his Word and through prayer. The fruit that is produced when you sit with God and steward your relationship with Him will look drastically different than if you sit with God to check Him off your list. Give the first of you, not the last. When you see time spent with God as a necessity, rather than something to be checked off your list, your days will shift and you will be satisfied. Christ is your source of life.
